Matthew was called to the Bar in 2004 and, since then, has practised primarily in the area of family law. He receives instructions to appear and advise from practitioners located in most capital cities and regional centres of Australia. Those who brief him range from sole practitioners to legal departments of national and international corporations.
Matthew has extensive experience in advice, trial and appellate work of varying complexity. For several years, Matthew practised from Parramatta before forming Waratah Chambers with the other foundation members of the floor.
Prior to practising as a barrister, Matthew held employment in the Secretariat and Legal Department in the Office of the C.E.O. of a major Australian bank. This included, for several years, appointments as Company Secretary to many of the Bank’s significant subsidiary and joint venture companies in Australia. In addition, Matthew was appointed to manage the corporate reporting and oversight of various offshore subsidiaries, some of which were located in far flung locations. He therefore boasts significant experience and knowledge as to matters pertaining to corporate structuring and large national and international transactions.
Matthew, in addition to this, has hands-on experience in statutory drafting and interpretation as he was, for a time during his undergraduate years, a legislative adviser to a member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. He regards his experience with the parliamentary system and its participants as being formative in developing his patience and understanding as to parenting matters.
Apart from several words in Cantonese that cannot be published and several charming phrases in Italian, Matthew can sadly only communicate in the English language.
