Stephen Scarlett is a former Judge of the Federal Circuit Court (19 June 2000 to 28 July 2016) where he worked both in the Family Law and General Federal Law (Administrative Law, Bankruptcy, Migration, Human Rights and Anti Discrimination Law) jurisdictions of the Court. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2015 for his services to the Judiciary, the law and professional organisations.
Previously, he was a Magistrate of the Local Court of NSW from November 1988 including, from 1995 to June 2000, heading the Children’s Court of NSW as Senior Children’s Magistrate. In the Children’s Court he dealt with criminal law, family law and children’s care and protection matters.
Prior to his appointment to the Local Court, Stephen practised as a solicitor in Parkes, NSW, working mainly in the areas of criminal law, family law and personal injury law.
Stephen has completed mediation courses with Resolution Institute and Bond University. He holds national accreditation as a mediator.
Stephen Scarlett holds Bachelor’s degrees in Arts and Law and a Master’s degree in Law, all from the University of Sydney. He holds post graduate Diplomas in Criminology from the University of Sydney and Social Science from the University of New England.
Stephen served in the Army Reserve from 1964 to 2006 in a variety of roles, including as a Legal Officer and later as a Legal Consultant. As a Legal Consultant, he served as Counsel Assisting various Boards of Inquiry and also carried out a number of sensitive and complex investigations, both in Australia and overseas. He retired in July 2006 as a Colonel in the Australian Army Legal Corps.
